Double helical gears offered by us are also known by the name of Herringbone gears. These are introduced in the market for overcoming issues related to axial thrust which is presented by single helical gears. These gears have two sets of teeth which are set in V shape and functions as two mirrored helical gears joined together. The mirrored arrangement cancels out net axial thrust as each half of gear thrusts in opposite direction.

For providing both possible rotational directions, these gears are made available in two possible arrangements for oppositely-oriented helical gears/gear faces. One of these arrangements is stable and the other unstable.

Under stable orientation, the axial force is directed towards center of gear whereas in unstable orientation, both of the axial forces are directed away from center of gear. Under both arrangements, total axial force available on each gear is zero when gears are correctly aligned. Further, in case these gears become misaligned in axial direction, unstable arrangement present help in generating net force that can lead to dis-assembly of gear train, while at the same time stable arrangement helps in generating net corrective force.

In case where direction of rotation is reversed, direction of axial thrust is also reversed, hence making the stable configuration unstable and functioning vice versa. These stable double helical gears can also be directly interchanged with spur gears without any requirements for different bearings.



The most common application usage of these gears is in the field of Power Transmission as its curved teeth allow efficient handling of high capacity power transmission. Further, these gears help in achieving reduced pulsation because of which these are used for extrusion and polymerization applications.
